In times of Squarespace, WIX, Jimdo, Shopify and the like, the question arises whether it still makes sense to hire a web designer. With the help of homepage construction kits, a website can apparently be built within a few hours without any problems. Easy-to-understand user interfaces make programmers seem unnecessary.

But is that really the case?

Are there any pitfalls when using homepage building kits?

It’s as simple as can be. You register with an e-mail address and within minutes you get your own homepage with the help of templates. Not only is it fast, practical and free to start with, but it is possible for anyone, even with no previous experience, to create aesthetically pleasing websites. This is basically great and has its justification. I also sometimes recommend systems like Shopify, depending on the business purpose. Still, as is often the case, the devil is in the details.

It gets expensive with details

For example, Shopify simply does not allow you to customize the checkout page. This only works with the largest Shopify package and only makes sense with a corresponding turnover. The biggest Shopify package costs over 3000 Euro / year and you also have to give at least 1.4% of every Euro you sell to Shopify. Of course, you always have to give a small percentage to the payment service providers, but for 3000 euros / year you still have to design and set up your online store yourself and you still lack important functions that have to be purchased expensively through apps:

You need a banner for your e-mail newsletter? With Shopify up to 1000 visitors and with advertising no problem and free, beyond that from 16 euros per month, only for the banner.

Or do you want to offer your customers a wish list in the online store? Up to 100 products/month (for all visitors) on the list are possible for free, after that this function costs 12 Euro per month.

Many apps on Shopify come with a “Free Plan”. That means they can basically install the plugin for free, but again, it’s a detail question whether something like that makes sense.

For example, if you want to offer more products under your product or display them under the shopping cart (cross-sells and upsells), there is a “free” app that makes this possible. You only have to give an additional 2.9% of the revenue generated by this to the makers of the app.

Thus, fixed costs of 60-80 euros / month can quickly arise for basic functions that a web designer can easily implement.

Products can become unprofitable due to the wrong online store

In addition, products that were calculated to be profitable in themselves can quickly become a loss if the sales structure eats up the profit.

Which construction kit is the right one?

It is similar with other providers. Meaningful options for online shops are only offered in the premium packages, such as the creation of customer accounts at Squarespace or the possibility of seamless customization of the templates.

A serious web designer, on the other hand, will always choose a variant that gives you the flexibility you need. For example, it makes no sense to recommend a construction kit or a certain shop system if you do not know the product and the respective requirements. For example, a fashion product configurator will have different requirements than a drop shipping business model.
